The Design of Business

Mystery - Heuristic - Algorithm

The road to wisdom begins with ignorance

Reliability vs validity
- reliability = consistency
- validity = accurate

Advances in knowledge comes from the pursuit of valid (not reliable) results

Deductive reasoning: general to specific
Inductive reasoning: specific to general

No new idea can be determines by inductive or deductive reasoning by definition rather only by logical leaps of the mind.
Racing is doing.

"What if i don't win"  There is no dishonor in losing the race. There is only dishonor in not racing because you are afraid to lose. Now get out on the track, that's where you belong.

Remembering is the present folding back on the past. Good racers don't remember.

Our successes and failures are brought on by none other than ourselves.

People cheer champions who overcome adversity. Nobody cheers the sun for just rising.

Live every day as though it had been stolen from death

Descartes Bones

Discourse on the Method

"I am the way, the truth, and the life" or "I think therefore I am" as pointing out that the ability to think is proof that there is reality or something that thinks

Conflicts between faith and reason

Human reason supplants received wisdom

Cartesianism: the body is a kind of machine and death an absolute barrier

Spinoza believed (as did Einstein) that God is all of nature and we are some subset of it.  Order to it all, but not a God that controls fate and human actions.  Aethiesm believes in happenstance.
Theres a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

Rebelling against what is expected

Envision, create and believe in your own universe.

Packards Law: a great company is more likely to die of indigestion of too much opportunity rather than starvation of too little.

The universe will test your commitment and passion.

Crown Brand: execution. Transformation. Culture.

Ur culture is ur brand.

Define core values. Formalized defn of culture.   Hire and fire on them. The test.
The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one. - Teacher Antolini

Holden Caulfied is a cynical punk.

Black Swan

The idea of relying on faith, not reason, is known as fideism

NED: no evidence of disease vs. END: evidence of no disease

A thousand days cannot prove you right, but one day can prove you wrong

Searching for weaknesses vs confirming truths makes you great (vs good).

Memory is like a self serving dynamic revision machine: you remember the last time you remembered the event and, without realizing it, change the story at every subsequent rememberence.

Ayn Rand: Fountainhead

You will never be more than a dilettante of the intellect, unless you submerge yourself in some cause greater than youself.

Every lonliness is a pinnacle

Religion breeds selfishness. It preaches nothing but a single concern; the salvation of one's own soul.

To achieve absolute virtue one must be willing to take the foulest crimes upon his soul for the sake of his brothers.

Integrity.  The ability to stand by an idea.

Collectivism = selflessness. No motive and no virtue = kill individualism and mans soul.

Ayn Rand: Atlas Shrugged

Basic Philosophy:  the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.

Happiness is a state of non-Contradictory joy- a joy without penalty or guilt, a joy that does not clash with any of your values and does not work for your own destruction, not the joy escaping from your mind, but of using your mind's fullest power, not the joy of faking reality, but of achieving values that are real, not the joy of a drunkard, but of a producer.
