Human reason supplants received wisdom

Cartesianism: the body is a kind of machine and death an absolute barrier

Spinoza believed (as did Einstein) that God is all of nature and we are some subset of it.  Order to it all, but not a God that controls fate and human actions.  Aethiesm believes in happenstance.
