Some Notes Worth Keeping

Mojo - Marshall Goldsmith

Mojo: Sometimes called "The Zone"

-Identity (who do you think you are?)
-Achievement
-Reputation
-Acceptance

What Matters Most:
-Health
-Wealth
-Happiness
-Relationships
-Meaning

However, our default response in life is "inertia". See TV show inertia. We continue doing what were currently doing.

Leadership is a contact sport

Evaluate tasks / activity on
-Long term benefit vs
-Short term happiness/meaning

Before you say it: ask yourself: "is it worth saying"

Identity: how do you define yourself?
- between past and future self
- between self and others image

-Remembered: self and past identity
-Reflected: others and past identity (aka: feedback)
-Programmed: others and future (aka: mothers view of your identity - Marine Corps is good at this)
-Created: Self and Future identity. (this is the beating heart of Mojo). Where your mission becomes more important than your ego.

U2 Bono is a master at managing his identity.

Your resume should be a history of your identity, not experiences. (regular guy, rock star, humanitarian).

For most people, the "act" is the biggest reward. Why else would a musician, actor, dancer, etc select these professions?

Reputation: combination of who you are (defined by others) and what you've done.

Character: combination of who you are (defined by self) and what you've done.

Would you rather be smarter or more effective? Build elegance or practical solutions?

Reputations are formed by a sequence of actions resembling one another. Not by single events. Look for your own behavioral patterns thy others see. Most if us are adept at finding these patterns in others, but not in ourselves.

1. Name 6 great moments in the last year
2. What made them great?
3. How did they resemble each other
4. Label them with personal qualities
5. How well known are these moments
6. How much would others agree w your label
7. Repeat for bad moments
