The Difference Between Great Managing and Great Leading:  Marcus Buckingham

Some Notes Worth Keeping

Managing: Individualization
If you are good at getting people to work harder for you than anyone else, you are good at managing.

Good Managing: Find out what is unique about someone and capitalize on it.

The best companies (managers) get their strengths together and neutralize their weaknesses.

Managers only have time to invest.

If you want to learn about success, study success rather than failure.  Don't become an expert in failure and think you understand success.

Employee engagement: my manager gets me!  Most important lever.

"if you want him to learn more, you should look at where he learns BEST"

Weaknesses are NOT areas of opportunity. They are simply weaknesses. Areas of opportunity are strengths. Let's not take Michael Jordan and teach him baseball.

Go work on your strengths. Take a page out if sports. This is how sports teams win. Focusing on strengths.

If you have an unfair advantage, double down.

What percentage of a typical day do you spend playing to your strengths?

Benevolent Distortion. You believe (actually believe) you can beat the odds.

Leadership: rallying people to a better future.

-Optimism (predisposed to believe that if you want to know what is around the corner, just walk around the corner). "how bad could it be".

The opposite of a leader is a pessimism

Whatever the bleakness of the mood, things can get better

-Ego: craving for significance. Set obscene goals. They believe they have the right to be at the helm. They make a huge claim: " We can do this "

They make bold claims that are bigger than themselves

It is the opposite of managing. They find commonalities (whats universal) and capitalize on it.

Leaders know that we all fear the unknown. Universally. Leaders traffic in the unknown. The future.

Leaders take propped legitimate fear of the unknown and turn it in to spiritedness (confidence). They do it with Vividness. Show them what the future looks like.  A vivid mental word picture.

Followers are begging for you to answer these four questions:
1 who do we serve? Pick an audience
2 what is our core strength? Why will we win? (and not 5.  1 or 2). Be vivid.
Facebook: we ship code.
3 what is our core score? Pick a number. You get 2. That's it.
4 what actions can we take today. Be unambiguous.

Donald Brown: the universal people. Book

A weakness is an activity that weakens you. It drains you (even if you are good of it).

A strength is an activity that strengthens you. You are usually in a state of flow. They fill you up. The activities you are drawn to.

Strength drives Practice drives Performance.
